PhD candidate Helena Latečki completed her professional training at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia di Bologna (INGV) from May 15 to 26, 2023. Her visit to the institute is also a continuation of the collaboration with dr. sc. Irene Molinari, with whom she is currently working on a paper about the simulation of an earthquake that occurred in the central Adriatic Sea in 2021. Accordingly, the training was mainly focused on the details of the simulation methodology and the research plan as well as the use of the resources of the institute cluster HPC-ADA. In short, the working days were spent as follows:
- Monday, May 15th - visiting INGV and getting to know colleagues working there;
- Tuesday, May 16th - data collection and processing for the creation of a 3D model;
- Wednesday, May 17th - defining the input data base for simulations, an online meeting with Irene regarding the research plan;
- Thursday, May 18th - familiarizing with the HPC-ADA cluster's operation and installing the necessary programs for simulations;
- Friday, May 19th - launching the initial simulations and analyzing the results;
- Monday, May 22nd - working on modifying input parameters for simulation purposes and running them on the cluster;
- Tuesday, May 23rd - a seminar presenting the DuFAULT project and the research results obtained so far;
- Wednesday, May 24th - visiting the seismic station IT09A (Bentivoglio) and learning about the maintenance of the INGV 4P seismic network;
- Thursday, May 25th - participating in GeoTalk (a meeting of scientists at INGV) on the topic "A Concise History of Mainstream Seismology", working on simulations;
- Friday, May 26th - outlining the plan for further research and returning to Zagreb.
The visit to the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia di Bologna was very successful and productive, providing a basis for further advances in the field of earthquake scenario simulations for the wider Dubrovnik area.
